Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after her imprisonment in the United Kingdom.
Mrs. Ekweremadu, her husband, and a medical doctor were sentenced for their involvement in a controversial case involving an organ donor for their daughter Sonia, who suffers from kidney disease.
Ike Ekweremadu was sentenced to 9 years and 8 months, while Beatrice received 4 years and 6 months. Dr. Obinna Obeta, their intermediary, was sentenced to 10 years. The trio was convicted of conspiring to bring a young man, David Nwamini, to the UK to exploit him for a kidney transplant, violating the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.
A family source confirmed that Mrs. Ekweremadu arrived in Abuja on Tuesday evening. Her return has sparked widespread celebrations in Mpu, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, her hometown, where residents gathered in large numbers to welcome her back.
