The Nigeria Police Force has debunked a viral claim alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, directed citizens to beat or attack officers who request to search their phones during stop-and-search operations.
In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described the claim as fake news, emphasizing that no such directive was issued. The IGP has never encouraged violence against law enforcement officers. Instead, citizens are advised to report any case of police misconduct through proper channels.
"The claim is entirely false and has no basis in reality. The IGP calls on citizens to foster cooperation with the police and to maintain the rule of law," the statement said.
The police urged the public to remain vigilant against misinformation and to verify news from credible sources. They also provided helplines and contacts for reporting misconduct, including:

Citizens can also report through social media platforms like Facebook (@nigeriapoliceforce), Instagram (@nigeriapoliceforce), and X (formerly Twitter) at @PoliceNG.
