Nigerians were shocked on Tuesday as reports emerged of Segun Olowookere, an only child, being sentenced to death in Osun State for allegedly stealing chickens. The severity of the punishment and the circumstances surrounding the case have sparked widespread debate.
Olowookere, who was arrested in 2010 at the age of 17, was accused alongside Sunday Morakinyo of robbing a policeman, Tope Balogun, in Oyan, Odo-Otin Local Government Area. The alleged crime involved stealing chickens, eggs, and mobile phones.
According to court records, they were also accused of robbing another individual, Balogun Taye, and attempting to rob Alhaja Umani Oyewo, among other charges. The prosecution claimed that the duo was armed with cutlasses and a Dane gun during the crimes.
In an exclusive interview with The Punch, Olowookere narrated his ordeal, recalling his arrest in November 2010.
“I was at my father’s shop in Oyan, discussing my university admission when we heard gunshots. Everyone ran except my dad and a few others. The police asked for me, and when my father demanded to know my offence, they couldn’t provide a clear answer,” he said.
Olowookere explained that he eventually approached the police, confused about the allegations. He was detained at a police post in Oyan before being transferred to the Okuku Divisional Police Headquarters, where he encountered other children in custody.
During the trial, the state counsel presented six witnesses, including police officers and alleged victims. Despite his lawyer’s argument that no concrete evidence tied him to the crime, Olowookere and Morakinyo were found guilty.
