Former President of the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ Union (SOKAPU), Dr. Jonathan Asake, has openly criticized the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu's administration, calling the claims of progress from subsidy removal savings "insincere."
Speaking to The Sun, Dr. Asake, who was the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2023 Kaduna State governorship election, expressed frustration with the current economic direction. He also called out the North's resistance to proposed tax reforms, labeling it as "laziness," and advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to field a South Eastern candidate in 2027 to stand a chance at reclaiming power.
Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Dr. Asake accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of robbing Peter Obi of a legitimate win, stating:
"Nigerians voted massively for Peter Obi, a leader with a clear foresight of where he wanted to take Nigeria. INEC deliberately denied him that victory, thwarting the will of the people."
He further criticized the administration's inability to address inflation, insecurity, and Nigeria's dependency on imports, emphasizing:
"Unless Nigeria becomes a country that produces, we cannot get anywhere. Importing and consuming without producing for export will lead us nowhere."
Dr. Asake’s remarks have reignited debates about the state of governance, the credibility of the 2023 elections, and the direction of Nigeria's economy under the current administration.
