In a recent video on YouTube, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, recently shared a thought-provoking message about the importance of home, community, and the final destination of life. Speaking to his congregation, he illustrated the daily routines people follow—working, trading, and traveling—but pointed out that in the end, everyone has a place they consider their final rest.
Drawing attention to the Igbos, a prominent ethnic group in Nigeria known for their entrepreneurial spirit, Adeboye remarked on how they excel in business and trade wherever they go. Whether it is in major cities like Lagos or abroad, Igbos often establish themselves and create homes. However, as Adeboye noted, come Christmas time, these successful businessmen and women make a pilgrimage back to their ancestral villages.
He vividly described how these villages, which might otherwise have only a few houses, are often graced with impressive mansions that belong to individuals who have worked in distant cities. Adeboye marveled at the contrast between the humble village setting and the opulent homes that serve as reminders of the success and hard work of the Igbos.
According to him, "You know, when we go to work, do all kinds of things, go to the market, buy, and sell, at night we go somewhere to sleep. In this case, He’s talking about where we will be finally."
"I like my brothers, the Igbos. Everywhere they go to trade and do whatever they want to do, they have accommodations there. But come Christmas time, where do they go? They go to the village. And if you go to the villages, you’ll be amazed at the mansions."
"I mean, you will be amazed. The village itself may have a total of maybe 20 to 25 houses, and then you see one mighty mansion there. It belongs to somebody who works in Lagos. And there’s nothing you can do to keep a normal Igbo man in Lagos at Christmas time—he has gone to the village."
