In a rare and emotional revelation, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has responded to claims made by General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), Nigeria’s former Head of State. Gowon recently disclosed how he personally intervened to prevent Obasanjo’s execution during the brutal regime of General Sani Abacha. Obasanjo, imprisoned on allegations of plotting a coup, expressed deep gratitude for Gowon’s unexpected support during one of the darkest periods in his life.
This emotional exchange occurred at the first-ever Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival, held at the 10 Commandments Prayer Altar in Plateau State. During the event, Gowon detailed how he appealed directly to Abacha and even traveled the world to thank those advocating for Obasanjo’s release. Surprisingly, Obasanjo admitted he only recently learned about Gowon’s personal letter pleading for his life.
In his heartfelt response, Obasanjo stated, “I went around the world thanking those who appealed and prayed for my release from prison. But I did not know you wrote a personal letter for my release until you said it yesterday; I thank you for that.”
Obasanjo also commended Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his peace-building efforts and urged leaders to prioritize the welfare of their citizens. His remarks highlighted the significance of unity in overcoming challenges and fostering national progress.
This interaction between two of Nigeria’s most iconic leaders sheds light on the hidden dynamics of power, loyalty, and reconciliation within the country’s turbulent political history.
