A mining site in Maiagwagwa, located in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, has collapsed, causing the death of at least 13 people.
The Chairman of Bassa LGA, Dr. Joshua Riti, confirmed the sad news to reporters on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Jos. Dr. Riti expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident, which happened last Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the mining site, where the collapse occurred, is near the boundaries of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs.
According to Dr. Riti, seven of the people who died were from Bassa LGA.
“This is a very sad incident. These young people were just trying to find a way to earn a living,” he said. "They were working hard to survive in these tough economic times but, unfortunately, lost their lives."
Dr. Riti also sent his deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones of those who passed away in the accident.
Most of the victims were young, between the ages of 18 and 30. Six of them were from Kiche land in Rukuba chiefdom.
