The United States is offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest of Olalekan Abimbola Olawusi, a Nigerian man who has been on the run since 2017. Olawusi, 48, is facing trial for allegedly causing the death of his 3-month-old son.
According to a report on the U.S. Marshals Service website, Olawusi was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of serious bodily injury to a child. On April 3, 2017, emergency workers in Providence, U.S., found his baby with severe injuries at a home. The baby was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest and needed resuscitation to revive him.
Doctors found that the child had 18 injuries in various stages of healing, showing signs of long-term abuse. His injuries included a skull fracture, brain injury, and fractures in his ribs, arms, legs, and collarbone. Sadly, the child passed away six months later, on October 31, 2017.
Initially, Olawusi was arrested on April 20, 2017, and charged with child abuse, but he was released the same day. Shortly after his release, he fled the country. Following the child’s death, the charge against him was increased to murder.
The U.S. Marshals Service joined the search for Olawusi in November 2017 after the Providence Police Department and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office asked for help. Investigations showed that Olawusi left the U.S. from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on June 20, 2017, using his Nigerian passport.
Don Freeman, a Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal, said Olawusi is now on the U.S. Marshals Service 15 Most Wanted list, with a reward of up to $25,000 for anyone who can help capture him.
