The scandal involves not only Engonga, but also many women with close ties to powerful figures in Equatorial Guinea, which has led to various theories about the reason behind the leak. Some believe it was done to ruin Engonga’s reputation, as he is seen as a possible candidate to replace President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, who has been in power since 1979.
