A soon-to-be-married couple, Vershima Mker and Lami Iorvihi, are seeking justice after reportedly being assaulted by Nigerian military personnel in Abuja. The incident, captured in a viral video, shows the couple being attacked in the Gwarinpa area after allegedly obstructing a military convoy.
The video begins with Mker questioning the officers, asking, "How did I bash your car?" Moments later, the officers allegedly dragged him out of the car and used a horsewhip on him. Iorvihi, who was also injured, pleaded with the officers, saying, "Jesus! He is not feeling fine."
When Iorvihi tried to record the incident, the officers reportedly confiscated her phone, and the footage cut off abruptly. The couple claims they were detained for eight hours at a police station, where they were forced to write an apology under duress.
In response, the couple has filed a lawsuit demanding N150 million as compensation for the "inhuman treatment and injuries" inflicted on them.
The lawsuit also calls for the dismissal of Major General G.S. Mohammed and Corporal A. Abubakar, who were allegedly involved in the assault.
Army Promises Investigation
The Nigerian Army has announced an immediate investigation into the incident. According to a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered due diligence to uncover the truth.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting law-abiding citizens and assured the public of a thorough probe.
