A tragic incident occurred in Ikeja, Lagos, as an unidentified man was crushed to death by a moving train on Monday, October 21, sparking grief and shock among onlookers. This accident comes just 10 days after a similar fatality in Oshodi.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the accident. LASEMA’s response team arrived on the scene to recover the lifeless body, which has now been handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for identification.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday. Initial investigations indicate the man was hit by the train while crossing the tracks. His body was immediately recovered and transferred to the morgue.
Authorities are under intense pressure to enhance safety measures to prevent such recurring accidents. Following recent fatalities, the Lagos State Task Force has promised to arrest traders who operate too close to train tracks, especially in areas like Mile 2, where repeated warnings have gone unheeded.
Despite several crackdowns, traders continue to sell their goods dangerously near the tracks. Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, the Task Force spokesperson, emphasized that they would intensify efforts to remove offenders and prevent more avoidable tragedies.
People are wondering: what is it with these people and train tracks? Despite so many warnings, it’s almost like some of them enjoy the risk, as if they believe trains will magically stop for them! But after such a sad incident, everyone’s calling for swift action.
The authorities, of course, promise they’ll tighten up. Hopefully, this is the last such tragedy we witness for a long, long time. Naija people sha! Let’s pray this doesn’t repeat itself.
