Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, visited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday morning but was not questioned during his visit. Bello went to the EFCC office following an invitation related to allegations of financial fraud.
According to a statement from his media office, directed by Ohiare Michael, the officials at the EFCC informed Bello that he was free to leave without any interrogation. Michael expressed uncertainty about what this outcome means for Bello.
During his visit, Bello was accompanied by Usman Ododo, the current Governor of Kogi State. The visit followed discussions with Bello's family, legal team, and political allies. Bello wanted to demonstrate his respect for the rule of law and his commitment to due process.
Michael emphasized that the case against Bello has been ongoing in a competent court, where he has been represented by his lawyers at every hearing. He noted that it was important for the former governor to visit the EFCC to clear his name, stating that Bello has "nothing to hide and nothing to fear."
Bello believes in the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its efforts to combat corruption in Nigeria. He has been recognized for establishing anti-corruption measures during his time as governor, aiming to ensure that state resources are used effectively for the benefit of the people.
The director also mentioned that Bello was joined by several prominent Nigerians during his visit to the EFCC headquarters. He expressed hope that the commission would act professionally and respect Bello’s rights as a citizen of Nigeria.
