The couple's landlady, Mrs. Lovejane Nwiwu, witnessed the gruesome event. She reported hearing strange prayers from Mr. Uzor around 10 pm and later, his wife screaming for help around 1 am. When Mrs. Nwiwu tried to intervene, Mr. Uzor attacked her as well, injuring her hand and face.
The attack reportedly stemmed from Mr. Uzor's frustration over his wife's inability to conceive after a year of marriage. A friend had taken him to a prayer house in Aba, after which he performed some rituals and began behaving erratically. This culminated in the violent assault on his wife.
The community's vigilante group, led by Mr. Ambrose Jonah, apprehended Mr. Uzor after he confessed to the crime at a neighbor's house. Mrs. Uzor and Mrs.
Nwiwu were both hospitalized at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia, where they received visits from Abia State First Lady, Mrs. Priscilla Otti. She condemned the attack and assured that justice would be served.
The prognosis for Mrs. Uzor's eyesight remains uncertain, pending her recovery. Mrs. Otti also made a cash donation to support the victims' medical expenses.
This tragic incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws against gender-based violence in Nigeria.
