So it happened again; Reno Omokri, our handsome friend decided to play history lecturer and as usual, he has chosen a topic that ignites fire in many people’s bellies: Who built Lagos? A certain Eze Igbo is saying that Igbos were the ones who created Lagos whiles Reno can not let that go unchallenged.
Classic Reno style! With this, he remembers census records of 1891 which would prove that Lagos was a big town even before anyone could imagine making such a claim.
According to him on Twitter, for over 150 years, Lagos was the most developed area of Nigeria. Imagine! The place had traffic jams by 1901 already. Seems like no one actually “built” much about the city called Lagos.
Reno also reminds us that Sir Gilbert Thomas Carter who built Carter Bridge in 1901, and yes you heard me right —1901! That’s way earlier than most of us even existed as embryos talk less of our fore parents.
This narrative about ‘Igbo-built-Lagos’ doesn’t make any sense with an existing infrastructure comprising bridges, streetlights and Nigeria’s first power plant established as early as 1886.
But, oh wait, Reno’s not done. He drops another historical fact-bomb: Lagos Stock Exchange was founded not just by Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, but also by other fine gentlemen like Chief Akintola Williams. And for those wondering why Sir Louis was made president, it wasn’t because he was Mr. Moneybags. It was more like, "Eh, Louis, you can have the title, we’re good."
If you really want to credit someone for building Lagos, Reno suggests looking no further than Sir Mobolaji Bank Anthony. This man wasn’t just wealthy, he was wealthy wealthy. He built and donated the Ikeja General Hospital, among other significant contributions. Take that, Eze Igbo!
In conclusion, Reno Omokri wants you to remember: before you go around saying you built Lagos, maybe check in with the history books—or better yet, call Reno. He’s got all the receipts.
Reno Omokri: Table shaker, historian, and now, official fact-checker of wild Lagos claims!
