In reaction to recent demands by some groups that Igbo people should leave Lagos State, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly stated that such persons who advocate for them will have to be the ones leaving instead. He stressed that Nigeria is owned by everyone and that no one should be forced out of any part of the country.
Speaking at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State while hosting leaders of Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, Obasanjo also expressed his faith in Nigeria’s unity. He recounted efforts made when different ethnic groups namely Yorubas, Igbos and Hausas fought together for the country’s unity rather than its division.
Obasanjo’s statement came after a social media handle named ‘LagosPedia’ called for a forceful transfer of Igbo people from Lagos and other South-Western states. The handle used #IgboMustGo and announced plans for demonstrations demanding expulsion of Igbo from the area.
Moreover, Obasanjo debunked long-standing rumours concerning his alleged Igbo origin by laughing off claims that his father came from Anambra State.
