The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 23-year-old man named Samson for stabbing his mother to death in Obiaruku, Delta State. The arrest was confirmed by the Delta State Police Command spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, on Wednesday.
A video posted on social media by a user named Ose showed Samson holding the knife he allegedly used to kill his mother. The body of his mother was seen lying in a pool of blood.
In the video, Ose captioned, “Tragedy strikes in Obiaruku, Delta State as a young man suspected to be mentally unstable allegedly stabs his mom to death. Police apprehend the suspect.”
Reports say Samson was moved to Asaba, the capital of Delta State, to learn a trade after finishing secondary school. However, he was brought back a few months later after he got involved with a group of young men who introduced him to drugs, which affected his mental health.
After returning to Obiaruku, Samson's mother took him to a traditional mental health facility for treatment. An eyewitness, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Vanguard which was observed by PrudentJ2 that the family lives on Jehovah Street, Obiedike Obiaruku, near their shop. The witness shared details about the tragic event.
According to the eyewitness, “The mother is in her 50s, but certainly not up to 60. At around 5 a.m., the mother came outside and saw her son, Samson, smoking. She confronted him, telling him it was too early.
“Perhaps she shouted at him. Then Samson went inside, brought out a knife, and stabbed his mother. The elder brother, who is a sickle cell patient, was the one who shouted, which made people enter the compound because the gate of the compound was still locked at the time.”
This tragic event has shocked the community and brought attention to the issues of drug abuse and mental health in the region. Samson’s actions have left many in the community grieving and questioning how such a tragedy could have been prevented.
Samson is now in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident. The police are also looking into the mental health history of Samson and his involvement with drugs.
