A total of 18 countries have approved the agreement, with notable signatories including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan. However, it is worth noting that China did not sign the agreement.
The 20-page document focuses on providing general recommendations rather than strict legal obligations, offering guidance to companies on how to enhance the security of their AI systems.
The guidelines stress the significance of monitoring the infrastructure of AI models, vetting software suppliers to ensure their reliability, and implementing measures to detect tampering both before and after the release of AI systems.
Additionally, the document highlights the importance of training staff on cybersecurity to ensure they are equipped to handle potential threats.
It is important to note that the guidelines do not address certain controversial topics related to AI, such as image-generating models, deepfakes, or copyright issues. The document primarily concentrates on security concerns during the development and deployment stages of AI systems.
The effort to create these guidelines was led by the U.K. National Cyber Security Center in collaboration with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
While the guidelines are not legally binding, they serve as a significant step toward establishing best practices and raising awareness about the importance of security in AI development.
