A man has been arrested for killing his wife because of sachet water
A Yaba Magistrates' Court in Lagos State has remanded a 49-year-old man, Lawrence Itakpe, in custody for allegedly killing his wife, Rebecca, at their home in the Ajah area of the state.
Itakpe was charged with one count of murder over an incident that occurred on December 5, 2022.
The couple, who had been married for 11 years and had two children, argued over bottled water, leading to the killing.
Itakpe is said to have rushed to the kitchen and returned with a kitchen knife, with which he allegedly stabbed his wife several times in the chest and neck.
It was gathered that security knocked on the couple's door while the argument was going on, but the defendant allegedly refused to open the door.
The charge against the suspect read;
“That you, Lawrence Itakpe, on the 5th of December, 2022, at about 5:00 p.m., at 50, Abimbola Street, Seaside Estate, Badore Ajah, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, unlawfully killed one Rebecca Itakpe, aged 47, thereby committing an offense punishable by under Section 233 of the Penal Code of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”
After being summoned by the police prosecutor, Inspector Haruna Magaji asked the court to remand the defendant for 30 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The Chief Justice, O.Y. Adefope granted the request before adjourning the case until January 31, 2023.
