Facebook plans to hire 10,000 employees in the European Union to develop the "metaverse.
The metaverse is a new concept used to describe "web 3.0," which many technologists, blockchain connoisseurs, and futurists see as the next frontier of digital media and cyberspace.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been a vocal proponent of the metaverse concept.
In June, Zuckerberg said he wanted to turn Facebook from a social media platform into a "metaverse company" within five years.
Zuckerberg described his vision of the metaverse, which would use virtual reality technology to simulate physical spaces like the office: "In the future, instead of just doing this over a phone call, you’ll be able to sit as a hologram on my couch, or I’ll be able to sit as a hologram on your couch, and it’ll actually feel like we’re in the same place, even if we’re in different states or hundreds of miles apart. I think that is really powerful.”
The social media behemoth recently invested ~$50M in non-profits committed to "build[ing] the metaverse responsibly.
In the announcement, Facebook said: "The metaverse has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities.
