Popular Nigerian singer Simi has spoken out against people who keep calling her daughter “Duduke.” While many may think it is a sweet or affectionate name, Simi says it is not actually her daughter’s real name and has no special meaning.
The name “Duduke” became popular after Simi released a song of the same title when she was pregnant. Since then, fans and followers have often referred to her daughter using the song’s name.
However, in a recent video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Simi made it clear that she is not comfortable with the nickname.
“People call my daughter Duduke, which I do not like. It does not mean anything,” she said in the video. Simi explained that the word “Duduke” was just a sound she used in the song to express her feelings at the time, not an actual name. “It is just a beat,” she added.
Simi admitted that she understands fans mean well when they use the nickname. “I get it; it is coming from a good place and I try not to react,” she said.
Still, she stressed that she would prefer if people referred to her daughter by her real name, Adejare, rather than by a song title that has no personal meaning to the child.
Simi’s message is a reminder that names carry meaning and identity, and it is important to respect what parents choose to call their children. She wants her daughter to be known by her given name, not a catchy word from a song.
