Kano State Hisbah Board officials have apprehended 11 individuals for breaking the fast during Ramadan. The arrests were carried out as part of the board's enforcement operations, which involved thorough searches of eateries and markets across the city.
Lawal Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Hisbah Board, confirmed the arrests during an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. He revealed that the arrests took place on Tuesday, with 10 men and one woman, who was caught eating from her groundnut-selling stall, being among those apprehended.
Ibrahim clarified that enforcement activities target Muslims, and non-Muslims are exempted. However, he warned that non-Muslims could face legal consequences if found selling food to Muslims during fasting hours.
"We arrested 11 individuals on Tuesday, including a woman selling groundnuts who was seen eating from her stall after being reported by some individuals. The other 10 were men apprehended across the city, particularly near bustling markets," Ibrahim stated.
He emphasized, "We do not detain non-Muslims as this does not fall under their jurisdiction. The only instance where they may face legal action is if we discover they are cooking food to sell to fasting Muslims."
